Bergen Catholic entered Saturday’s game as the underdogs against Don Bosco Prep.  The Crusaders entered the game ranked 44th in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings, 34 places behind Bosco.

The game was a battle of the defenses.  The Ironmen scored the only points of the first half with a field goal in the second quarter.  After a scoreless third quarter, Bergen put up ten points in the fourth quarter to win the game 10-3.

Throughout the game, Bergen’s defense recorded ten tackles for a loss, three of which were sacks.  On top of that, sophomore Jahmel Johnson reeled in an interception and fellow classmate Vin Martin blocked a punt.

Both of the typically high-powered offenses were held to limited yards.  Bergen outgained Don Bosco by only 232 to 229.

The decisive factor was Corey Russo’s fourth quarter rushing touchdown.  Russo carried the ball 18 times for 90 yards.

Quarterback Corey Gaarn had a productive day, completing 10 of 16 passes gaining 146 yards.

In this impressive defensive display, Bergen receives a well deserved jump up to 33rd in the nation.  At 6-2, the Crusaders have a two-week break before their last game against Ridgewood on November 7 at 7:00pm.
